Blog Entry: THERE may be no lions or tigers to see but a "Spondon safari'' is being seen as the latest way of bringing the community together. But rather than exploring game reserves people will et the chance to see gardens which are being opened up for the event. Some hosueholds will also hold tombolas, run bric-abrac stalls or put on barbecues to raise money for charity. Organiser Roy Battelle, 66, said: "Spondon already has a good community spirit and the safari is about building on that - we should not accept complacency. "It's essential people get to know each other. "You get some areas that have big houses with big gates at the front and you don't see people from one day to the next. cheap designer handbags from china "Life can be very isolated but in Spondon most people are more communityminded." The safari will take place on Saturday and Sunday. Each household will open its gardens at different times over the weekend to allow them to visit others who are taking part. Leaflets displaying the ad-dresses and opening times of participating gardens are being distributed in local shops and on noticeboards. The idea initially came from Park Road resident Derek Hathaway, a member of the Spondon Community Association. Mr Hathaway said: "People say 'good morning' in the street and nod to each other but don't have the chance to chat. "This is about giving people the chance to have a mosey around Spondon and to socialise." Mr Hathaway said he and his wife Anne will be holding a barbecue in order to raise funds for the Derby branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. yves saint lauren logo He said: "If the weather is decent it will be really nice." Alan and Mary Watson, of Gravel Pit Lane, will open their tropical garden to visitors to look around. Over more than 20 years, Mr Watson won many medals tag watch straps and scooped top prizes at Bakewell Show for his gladioli and dahlias six years running. The 70-year-old said: "I think the safari is a good idea because opening up all these gardens encourages people to come together. "We're going to have a jumble sale and all the money is going to charity." Spondon Cricket Club will also open its grounds to allow people to go on the balcony and have a pint.
